Fear of the (K)night

A game with two characters at once. The player steers a lantern with the keyboard and a knight with the mouse. If the knight falls into darkness, the game is over.

Visual rules

I wrote the art bible. Some of its rules:

  • Characters are built from primitive geometry. Thin limbs, a slightly corpulent body. The head is only a helmet with two glowing eyes. Few polygons and no soft curves, so the style stays cute but not childish.
  • No classic UI. Explanations appear as objects in the world. The controls, for example, hang on the wall as an old embroidered tapestry. The game is not interrupted.
  • Camera from a bird’s eye view, third person. The level turns slightly against the knight’s direction of movement, which makes the space feel more three-dimensional.

Prototype

Built in Unreal Engine. One level is playable. The hardest part was the look, somewhere between sketchy low poly and the 3D world.
